We recently tested the new Browning 525 30” which was a genuinely outstanding Sporter. Back-bored, with reduced barrel weight, it was clearly a winner, and marketed at an excellent price as well. Well, throwing caution to the winds once again this month, we have another simply stomping gun – a new 32” Opti-bored Beretta Silver Pigeon Sporter.

For hunting upland gamebirds, WesternHunter has it exactly correct. Bottom/open first, top/tighter second. Citori is a great gun. Sold one to a friend a while back and have regrets ever since. By the way, if you are shooting incoming birds like ducks or doves reverse that order but keep the chokes the same.
The Beretta will be a little livelier and the Browning will be a little heavier. Both are nice shotguns that will last a lifetime and then some. Personally, I own and shoot both brands and would lean towards the Beretta because the engraving on the new White Lightnings looks cheap, like it is rolled on instead of machined.
Rare Browning Shotguns
The wood on these guns is a little lacking in my opinion. I like the shape of the forearm compared to the Citoris, and hope that the "matte" sort of finish will show fewer scratches than the "polyurethane" look of the Citori Lightning. I wound up ordering the Silver Pigeon tonight. I've done a ton of searching the past couple of weeks.

  • Standard quality O/U shotguns begin with the plainer Beretta 686 and Browning Citori models. Personally, I favor the Browning Cynergy, now that Browning has found religion in this lower price bracket. Whether it is a Beretta 687 with a bunch of E's and L's after it, it is the same gun. Same goes for a Citori or a Cynergy.

  • Also take a look at the Browning Cynergy line. Much more slim and sleek than the classic Citori's, more akin to the Beretta lines but with the Browning fit. FWIW, I own a B325 and a Cynergy CX Sporting. They both fit me like a glove but the Cynergy's mechanical triggers are just oh-so-nice. I HAD a Silver Pigeon. Trigger was mushy and long.

I'm looking for a good O/U shotgun. Something mostly for bird hunting but that I can take to the range from time to time as well. The two guns that have caught my eye are the Browning Citori 725 Sporting or the Citori Lightning and then the Beretta Silver Pigeon. Looking for a 12 gauge. I'm willing to spend in the neighborhood of $2k.
